Great Questions to Ask Your Child This Week
  • Can you find chunks in words like "hopeful" or "cutting" or "candy"
  • What is a fact family?  Can you give me an example?
  • How does sand become a small particle?
  • What are some important symbols of our country?
What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

  • Phonics - Next week we will talk about how silent "e" and the long /u/ sound can actually make two different sounds.
  • Reading -   Our "Choice Library" is open!  We are loving reading different genres.  It is so much fun looking to see what books each child gravitates to.  Watching them choose books helps me guide them in the right direction when reading.
  • Writing -  AWESOME is the best word I can think of to describe how amazing these little writers are becoming!  They blow me away with their thinking, creative minds, and writing abilities!  Next week we will continue to write about books we read!

Math

We will be learning to solve word problems using the C.U.B.E. method:

  • C – Circle the important information
  • U – Underline the question
  • B – Box any keywords
  • E – Eliminate any extra information

In addition, we will continue decomposing numbers up to 100 in various ways and working on our addition and subtraction strategies. We’ll also practice skip counting to 120 by tens and fives.

Math Take-Home Activity

Keeping children entertained during long car rides can be challenging, but incorporating math games can make the journey fun and educational. Here are a few creative ideas to try:

  • License Plate Math: Have your child look at the numbers on passing license plates and perform different math operations. For example, add the digits together, and try to create the largest possible number using the digits.
  • Number Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of numbers and challenge your child to find them on road signs, buildings, or other cars. This game can help improve number recognition and observational skills.
  • Counting Cars: Choose a color or type of vehicle, and see who can count the most of that kind within a certain time frame. This game encourages quick thinking and sharpens counting skills.
  • Math Story Problems: Create simple word problems related to your journey. For instance, "If we travel 60 miles in one hour, how far will we travel in three hours?" Tailor the difficulty to suit your child's level.

Encourage your child to tackle a problem by making it engaging with a personal twist. For instance, "We visited Target and picked up some Pokemon cards.   I handed 3 to your brother, and now I have 7 left. How many cards did I start with?"

Number Practice
Help your child practice counting to 120 by ones, tens, and fives to reinforce their number skills!
Let's work together to build a strong foundation in math that will help us in all areas of life. Happy counting!

Fun math videos to watch with your child:

Science

We will continue to study the properties of rocks and soil. While taking our learning deeper by investigating if water can change the earth around us. My goal is that students make connections to that over time water can apply force (connection to past unit) and move and change rocks and soil.

Social Studies
We will continue our symbol research and then jump into important patriotic holidays celebrated in the US.

  • patriotic-showing love for your country
  • symbol- somethings that represents another thing or place
  • holiday- a day we honor or celebrate a person or event
**BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR INFORMATION ABOUT OUR UPCOMING CULTURE AND TRADITION FAMILY PROJECT!

Great Information
To Know For The Year
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

School Lunches

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval. Please fill out a form in the office for any visitors other than who is listed as guardians in your child's record.

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.

Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.

Thanksgiving Baskets

St. Ann’s Catholic Parish is once again sponsoring Thanksgiving basket deliveries (or a pickup option at St Ann’s Church if you prefer). This program provides families in need with a complete Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family. The baskets will be delivered to your home the weekend before Thanksgiving, so it is critically important that an adult representing the family be at the home between the hours of Noon and 4PM on Sunday, November 24th, 2024. The deadline to sign up for a basket is October 22nd, 2024.

Great Questions to Ask Your Child This Week
  • What are some of your new sight words that you are learning?
  • What does silent /e/ do to a vowel?
  • Create an addition fact for your child. Encourage them to come up with three related facts of their own. Then, ask them what they think a "Fact Family" represents.
What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

  • Phonics - Next week we will continue our long vowel study of silent /e/ with the vowel long /o/.  We are becoming excellent spellers in first grade!  We are also working on breaking apart CCVC and CVCC words into individual sounds. In reading we will also discuss how to use word parts to decode words.
  • Reading -   We have started our new set of snap words.  It is the second set of words that were sent home at conferences (orange paper).  Any extra practice you can give at home reading these words is great!
  • Writing -   We will use our writing skills to reflect on books that we read as well as write reviews on things that we love in order to persuade others.

Math

We will solve result-unknown word problems.  We will continue to decompose a number up to 100 more than one way as well as work on our addition and subtraction strategies. We will practice skip counting to 120 by tens and fives.

Math Take-Home Activity

These activities can be done during a walk, in the car, at bedtime—anytime! Have fun with your child and be amazed by what they know about numbers!

Fact Family Flashcards

Create flashcards with sets of numbers that make up fact families (for example 3, 4, 7 ). On one side write the numbers, and on the other, list the four related equations (for example      3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 - 3 = 4, 7 - 4 = 3).  Shuffle the cards and have fun quizzing each other or playing memory games to match equations with their corresponding fact family numbers.

Word Problems

Encourage your child to tackle a problem by making it engaging with a personal twist. For instance, "We visited Target and picked up some Pokemon cards.   I handed 3 to your brother, and now I have 7 left. How many cards did I start with?"

Number Practice

Fun math videos to watch with your child:

Science

We will investigate and document properties of particle size, texture, and color of different types of soils such as topsoil, clay, and sand.

**Bring in a rock or soil sample by Tuesday, October 22nd. See Mrs. Brown's note for more directions.

Social Studies
We will study US symbols and be able to explain and identify them. Examples of ones we will investigate are the statue of liberty, the bald eagle, the white house, the US flag, and many more. Learners will also be able to gather information from pebble go to research a symbol independently.

  • patriotic-showing love for your country
  • symbol- somethings that represents another thing or place
