Weekly  Announcements

We hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving break!  We are so thankful to be sharing this school year with you and your children!  Happy Thanksgiving to all!  We will see you all back at school on December 2nd. 




Lion's Club

Each year the Lion's Club of Coppell provides holiday baskets and toys to families in the Coppell ISD attendance area. Last year the Lion's Club provided a special Christmas for over 100 families for children who might otherwise have gone without.  The food baskets and toys are delivered by members of the Lion's Club, and the identity of the recipients is kept confidential.  If your family would benefit from a holiday basket and toys from the Lion's Club, please complete THIS FORM and return it to TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock, by Friday, December 6th.  Email kmatlock@coppellisd.com if you would like a paper copy sent home.


Metrocrest Services

Metrocrest Services provides two seasonal support options for families:  

  • The Thanksgiving Food program provides holiday favorites such as turkey, dressing, and food to help you and your family during the Thanksgiving holiday break. 

  • The Holiday program makes the holiday season a little brighter by allowing parents to go to our holiday store and choose unwrapped toys for their children. In addition, participants can pick up non-perishable food and winter coats for the family.

What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

  • Phonics/Grammar - We will talk about the /ing/ /ang/ /ung/ /ong/ and /ink/ /ank/ /unk/ /onk/ glued sounds in spelling.  We will also begin our study of parts of speech by starting with nouns.  
  • Reading -  In reading we will finish up our traditional tales unit with tall tales.  We are learning the different elements that go with each type of traditional tale (fairy tale, fables, tall tales).
  • Writing - We will begin our unit on poetry when we get back from Thanksgiving break.  Before we can attempt to write poetry we will learn about how poetry makes us feel when we hear it and how there are different types of poems that can be written and read. 

Math

We will continue to use tally marks and a t-chart to collect and sort data into 3 categories and then organize the data in a picture or bar graph.  We will also use pictures, objects, and a number sentence to solve change-unknown action problems.  

Graphing Activity to do while traveling

Create a "Travel Graph" using a simple paper or notebook sheet. Begin by drawing a horizontal line at the bottom of the page to represent the variety of interesting sights you may encounter. Next, draw a vertical line to indicate the frequency of those sights.
Encourage the children to gaze out the windows and identify different types of vehicles, animals, or landmarks. For instance, they could tally the number of red cars, cows, or bridges that come into view. They can mark or sketch a small picture on their graph each time they spot something.
As the journey continues, the kids can observe the most prevalent items in their travel surroundings. This activity not only keeps them engaged but also enhances their observation and counting skills while they enjoy the ride!

Math games using a deck of card

  1. Addition War: Similar to the classic card game War, each player flips over two cards and adds the values together. The player with the highest sum wins that round and takes the cards. If there's a tie, continue drawing cards until there's a winner.
  2. Make Ten: Lay out nine cards face up. Players take turns picking pairs of cards that add up to ten. If a player can't make ten, they draw a card from the deck and replace one on the table. The game ends when no more pairs can be made, and the player with the most pairs wins.

Number Practice

Help your child practice counting to 120 by ones, twos, fives, and tens to reinforce their number skills! Let's work together to build a strong foundation in math that will help us in all areas of life. Happy counting!

Science

We will look at the engineering design process and how it is a toll to help scientist problem solve. Student will work through the process to help solve a community problem.

Social Studies
Students will continue to learn that people celebrate customs, holidays, and celebrations. They will also be able to describe that traditions, customs, and holidays evolve from other cultures and generations. We are continuing to learn by gathering information about a topic using a variety of valid oral and visual sources such as interviews, music, pictures, symbols, and artifacts. Therefore, when reading at home it is helpful to ask comprehension questions to begin to show them that we learn important information when we read.

Great Information 
To Know For The Year 
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-) 
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

School Lunches 

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval. Please fill out a form in the office for any visitors other than who is listed as guardians in your child's record. 


Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes. 


Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.  


Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
