What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

It is time for middle of the year district assessments. This week we started with m-class assessments.  This is an assessment done one on one with the teacher.  It shows mastery of phonemic awareness skills.  It is a timed test to see how quickly your child can perform certain literacy skills.  This test can show an indicator for dyslexia in some learners.  This assessment will be completed by January 31st and results will come home in February.  Next week we will take the middle of the year Reading MAP.

  • Phonics/Grammar -   This week we started our look into vowel teams for spelling.  We concentrated on the /ea/ vowel team this week and will look at the /ai/and /ay/ vowel teams next week.

  • Reading -  We have new leveled books in our bag.  We will enjoy self selected texts when reading and self monitor to correct reading mistakes. We will also talk about Author's Purpose in reading (to persuade, to inform, or to entertain).
  • Writing -  We are writers!  For the next few weeks we will be completing journal entries to show our amazing writing abilities and to build confidence in our writing.

Math

We will focus on generating word problems based on a given number sentence.  This skill encourages critical thinking and helps students connect mathematical concepts to real-life scenarios.

Here are some ways to practice generating word problems from number sentences at home:

  1. Daily Life Scenarios:
Incorporate real-life situations into math practice. For example, if the number sentence is "? + 3 = 8," ask your child to create a story like, "There were some apples in the basket, and Mom added 3 more. Now there are 8 apples.  How many apples were in the basket in the beginning?

  2. Set aside time each day for your child to write a word problem in a notebook based on a number sentence you provide. Alternatively, you can make it a verbal activity where they create and say a word problem aloud.

We’ve been practicing this in class, and I’ve loved seeing how creative the kids can be with their word problems. It’s a wonderful way to build their critical thinking and storytelling skills while reinforcing math concepts.

  3. Interactive Games:
Turn word-problem creation into a fun game. For instance, write several number sentences on cards and have your child pick one, then challenge them to create a story problem in under a minute.

  4. Switch Roles:
Have your child give you a number sentence and create a word problem together. This role reversal allows them to see how someone else interprets and frames problems, reinforcing their understanding.

By practicing regularly and making it fun, your child will gain confidence and proficiency in connecting number sentences to meaningful stories!  Have fun working on math with your amazing mathematician!

Number Practice

Help your child practice counting to 120 by ones, twos, fives, and tens to reinforce their number skills! Let's work together to build a strong foundation in math that will help us in all areas of life. Happy counting!

Fun math videos to watch with your child:

Science

We will studying the 4 seasons and weather. In this unit we will make predictions, describe, look for patterns, use weather tools, & track and analyze data. Our goal is for students to be able to apply academic vocabulary and generate complete sentence response when describing or predicting weather.

Social Studies
We will being looking at what it means to put things in chronological order and how the tool of a timeline allows us to see an over view of important events or the life of a historical figure.

Students will work on pulling out important dates and placing them on a timeline when reading books, talking about our own life, and when we dive into learning about important people.

Great Information
To Know For The Year
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

School Lunches

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval. Please fill out a form in the office for any visitors other than who is listed as guardians in your child's record.

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.

Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
