Weekly Announcements
- Our weekly Library day is Thursday! On Thursday morning students will return their books. To make our library time purposeful it is important that students return their books weekly, so they are able to participate. We talked about making it a routine to put books in our backpacks on Wednesday night to help us remember.
- This newsletter can be translated to many different languages. To change the language, look at the "translate" button on the right hand side of this newsletter and use the drop down menu. If you need. help, please ask your child's teacher.
- Mark. your calendar for Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 5th from 5:00 - 5:45. This is for parents only. Join us to learn about first grade curriculum and everything that first grade has to offer! We can't wait to see you there!

What Will We Be Learning Next Week?
Language Arts
- Phonics - We will be talking about the short /i/ sound. We will take a spelling pretest on Monday and then our spelling test on Friday after we learn about the short /i/ vowel in words. Remember, if your child spells all the words correctly on the pretest, then a more challenging list will be sent home with the same spelling pattern. These spelling words are not considered "homework" but instead I am hoping that it will spark some great conversations about the sounds that letters make and how words are formed.
- Reading - I am working with each child on our M CLASS reading assessment. It is an individual assessment with each student and myself. It gives me a good idea on how they learn how to read and their knowledge of phonological awareness.
- Writing - We will be learning about our first grade writing journals and we will begin our first entries in the journal. We are concentrating on Capital letters, finger spaces, and periods at the end of a sentence. We are also talking about how to stretch a sentence to make it better.
Math
We will continue to work with numbers up to 20 to represent them in many ways. We observe patterns in our place value system that inform us how to represent, write, and express numbers. We will use words greater than/more than, less than, equal to as they compare numbers and explain why/where they placed the number on the open number line.
Great math questions to ask your child:
- Show your child one group of ten pennies and one group of 8 pennies. Ask your child how many tens and ones there are, and say the number. Repeat the other numbers from 11 to 19.
- Ask your child if a number is even or odd. See if they can tell you why a number is even or odd.

Science
We will continue to talk about the properties of an object, as well as this week we begin to classify and sort objects based on similar properties.
This school year we will focus on using academic language when collaborating with peers and will also begin to use that vocabulary in our writing. Therefore, I will add vocabulary words each week to our blog because the more exposure students have to academic language the stronger they will become in using them in conversation and writing.
Vocabulary:
- Property- describing an objects characteristics using our 5 senses. (Examples: texture, color, shape, weight, temperature, state of matter, system)
- Object- Something you can see or touch
Social Studies
We will talk about what makes a community. We will also talk about important authority figures in communities and their purpose. Students will make connections to the communities they are part of. We will also continue to work identifying characteristics of good citizens.
Vocabulary:
- Good Citizen- A person who is part of a community that shows positive character traits.
- Community- A place where people live, work, or play.
- - A rule made by the government and enforced in a community.
Great Information To Know For The Year
- Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar. Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior. Many times, the children forget. If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day. If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment. Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
- Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

School Lunches
Beginning on October 4th, immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays.
District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year. If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.
Dismissal
If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher. Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent. Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message. If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.
Birthday Treats
We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria. If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients. Please send the treats to our school nurse. She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class. These treats will be eaten at school. Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.
Volunteering
If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check. The sooner the better! You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year. You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
