Weekly Announcements

  • Special Friends Day is coming up on September 20th.  Your child may invite one special friend (think parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, special neighbor, etc.) to come to TCE to spend some time with us. You can visit the classroom, eat a snack, take a tour of the school, and visit the book fair.  Our Special Friends Day time is 9:15 - 10:15.

  • Our weekly Library day is Thursday! On Thursday morning students will return their books. To make our library time purposeful it is important that students return their books weekly, so they are able to participate. We talked about making it a routine to put books in our backpacks on Wednesday night to help us remember.
  • This newsletter can be translated to many different languages.  To change the language, look at the "translate" button on the right hand side of this newsletter and use the drop down menu. If you need. help, please ask your child's teacher.
  • Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Curriculum Night!  It was great to be able to share what first grade was all about. If you were not able to attend, pease click on the following link to access the presentation.  Curriculum Night
From the counselor:
Coppell Cares offers the Weekend Backpack Program for families who have financial need. Each Friday, learners receive a bag of snacks for the weekend. The goal of the program is to help eliminate food insecurity for children. They provide nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack items to eligible CISD children (and siblings). This weekly food program helps feed children over the weekend during the school year when they are not receiving meals at school.

If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please complete the online application below.  If you would prefer a paper copy to be sent home with your child, please email TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock, at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.  Families may sign up for this program at any time during the school year.  Deliveries will begin Friday, September 6th.  Deliveries will be suspended for Thanksgiving Week, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

Great Questions to Ask Your Child This Week
  • What did you write about in your writing journal?
  • How does the writing journal card help you write?
  • What books did you choose to put in your "Book in a Bag"?  Why did you choose those?
  • Ask your child to pick and describe a number between 0 and 20. For an extra challenge, they can choose a number greater than 20. Guide them through the process by asking:

    • Is the number even or odd?
    • How many digits does it have?
    • How many tens and ones are in the number?
    • What is the number's expanded form?

To extend the conversation, you can also ask, "Can you tell me a number greater or less than the one you chose?"

  • In science Mrs. Brown is teaching about properties. What is a property? How can we classify (sort) objects based on properties?

  • Can you tell me what a community is? Sample response would be "A community is a place where people live, work, or play."

What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

  • Phonics - To continue our short vowel study, we will be talking about the short /o/ sound.  Thank you for having those spelling conversations at home. We are also working on rhyming words and forming/changing compound words.
  • Reading - Phew!  We finished our MAP, M-Class, and kindergarten review sight word assessments.  These assessments, although timely, give me a great look into "what" and "how" your child learns.  Each child comes in at a different level and with this data I can take them from the level they are now and then help them to grow their skills.  If your child is still struggling with the kindergarten sight words, extra practice at home will definitely be useful as we are moving on to the beginning of our first grade words.
  • Writing -   We will learn more about how to use the journal card and word wall to help with our writing skills.  We write in our writing journals daily.  Right now we are doing "free writing" to help the children get comfortable with the routine of journals while working on appropriate capitals and lower case letters, punctuation, finger spaces, and illustrations that match the text.

Math

We will continue to compose and decompose numbers in more than one way as well as compare numbers up to 20.  We will learn addition strategies to help us solve addition problems.

Fun math videos to watch with your child:

Science

I can can explain how pushes and pulls can start, stop, or change the speed or direction of an object's motion. Students will be able to demonstrate these actions and identify real life examples of when we use push and pull. Students will also be able to describe how an object moves.

Vocabulary:

  • Push-
  • Pull-
  • Speed-
  • Motion-
  • Property- describing an objects characteristics using our 5 senses.  (Examples: texture, color, shape, weight, temperature, state of matter, system)
  • Object- Something you can see or touch
  • Classify- To sort objects by like properties or characteristics.

Social Studies

Vocabulary:

  • Good Citizen- A person who is part of a community that shows positive character traits.
  • Community- A place where people live, work, or play.
  • - A rule made by the government and enforced in a community.

Great Information To Know For The Year

  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

School Lunches

Beginning on October 4th, immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays.

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.

Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
