Weekly Announcements

  • Special Friends Day is coming up on September 20th.  Your child may invite one special friend (think parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, special neighbor, etc.) to come to TCE to spend some time with us. You can visit the classroom, eat a snack, take a tour of the school, and visit the book fair.  Our Special Friends Day time is 9:15 - 10:15.

  • Our weekly Library day is Thursday! On Thursday morning students will return their books. To make our library time purposeful it is important that students return their books weekly, so they are able to participate. We talked about making it a routine to put books in our backpacks on Wednesday night to help us remember.
  • This newsletter can be translated to many different languages.  To change the language, look at the "translate" button on the right hand side of this newsletter and use the drop down menu. If you need. help, please ask your child's teacher.
  • If you put money on your child's account for the book fair, please let your teacher know.  It can be very confusing for a little ones when we don't know who has money on their book fair account.  Thanks!
  • No Library this week due to book fair taking place.

Great Questions to Ask Your Child This Week
  • What do you want your special friend to see on Special Friend's Day?
  • What books did you see in the Book Fair Preview?
  • What did you write about in your writing journal this week?
  • Who did you play with at recess?  What's your favorite thing to do at recess?
  • What is a simple machine?
  • What did you get to do when we visited Kindergarten in Mrs. McKinney's room on Wednesday?
  • How did you make the Bee-Bots follow the correct path?
  • Ask your child to pick and describe a number between 0 and 20. For an extra challenge, they can choose a number greater than 20. Guide them through the process by asking:
    • Is the number even or odd?
    • How many digits does it have?
    • How many tens and ones are in the number?
    • What is the number's expanded form?
    • What is ten more or ten less?
    • What is one more or one less?

What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

  • Phonics - We will learn about the short vowel /u/ next week and continue our look into breaking apart compound words.  We are also talking about breaking apart words into individual phonemes (units of sounds in words).  Ask your child to hold our their arm and show you how they "break apart" a word into individual phonemes (with words that have 3-4 phonemes for example:  cat, mop, wish, that, frog, fast) This is a VERY important skill in first grade to help us sound out words and spell words.  This is a quick,  easy skill to practice anywhere -- in the car, eating dinner, when reading a book before bed -- anywhere!
  • Reading -  We are learning how to shop for new books during our silent reading time and how to choose the best book when book shopping.  We will talk about reading strategies we can use to help us read tricky words.
  • Writing -   Next week we will start learning about writing a Narrative Story.  We will talk about topic sentences and closing sentences to help make our story make sense.  We will also talk how to make a story move from beginning to end with our writing.

Math

We will continue to show a number as tens and ones.  We will compare two numbers to find which is greater or less.  We will begin discussing addition strategies and how to apply them when adding.

Fun math videos to watch with your child:

Science

I can can explain how pushes and pulls can start, stop, or change the speed or direction of an object's motion. Students will be able to demonstrate these actions and identify real life examples of when we use push and pull. I will also be able to describe how an object moves.
This week we will also continue to make connections to simple machines like wheel and anxle, levers, pulleys, and inclines.

Vocabulary:

  • Push- To apply force away from your body.
  • Pull- To apply force towards your body
  • Speed- How fast or slow something is moving
  • Motion- Movement
Social Studies

This week we will continue to focus on types of communities (urban, suburban, and rural). Students will independently create a community poster and will label identifying characteristics within.

  • Community- A place where people work, live, and play.
  • Urban Community- A city. Full of tall buildings, taxis subways, traffic and lots of people.
  • Suburban Community- A town near a big city. With neighborhoods, stores, parks.
  • Rural Community- A town with lots of open land. Farms, animals, and houses are spread out.
Great Information
To Know For The Year
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

School Lunches

Beginning on October 4th, immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays.

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.

Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
