Great Questions to Ask Your Child This Week
  • What did you enjoy doing with your special friend today?
  • What was your favorite book that you read this week during reading?
  • You are writing narratives during writer's workshop.  What is a narrative story?
  • Have your child show you how to write <, >, and = to compare two numbers.  Ask him or her to use words to explain each comparison.
  • What math skills are you working on in Dreambox?  Can you show me?
  • Can you read all 13 of your sight words?  If not, they are listed below!
What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

  • Phonics - Next week we will complete our short vowel study with the short /e/ sound.  Short /e/ tends to be the trickiest of all vowels so any extra discussion you can have at home about the short /e/ sound would be great!
  • Reading -  Next week we will continue to learn strategies to help solve tricky words while increasing our reading stamina.  We are also working on reading our snap words in a "snap".  Our first set of first grade snap words are:  here, went, said, run, let, say, then, saw, they, but, us, his, yes.
  • Writing -   We are working on narrative stories - writing about one small moment of time.  We are using transition words (first, next, last) to help tell a story in sequential order.  Next week we will continue to look at pictures that tell a story and then write a sequential story to go with the pictures.  All writing takes place in our journals.

Math

We will continue to use strategies to solve addition problems.  We will compose and decompose numbers up to 20 in more than one way.

Math Take-Home Activity
These activities can be done during a walk, in the car, at bedtime—anytime! Have fun with your child and be amazed by what they know about numbers!

Play "Guess My Number"!
Below are some suggestions, but feel free to come up with your own clues:

  • I am thinking of an even number. It is greater than 17 and less than 19. What number am I thinking of?
  • I am thinking of a number with 2 tens and 3 ones. What number am I thinking of?
  • I am thinking of a number that is 10 more than 22. What number am I thinking of?

Enjoy guessing and creating your own clues!

Number Practice
Help your child practice counting to 120 by ones and by tens to reinforce their number skills!

Fun math videos to watch with your child:

Great Information
To Know For The Year
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

School Lunches

Beginning on October 4th, immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays.

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.

Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.

Photos From The Week

We can use symbols to show how numbers compare and tell you the why!

We know 47 is greater than 15 because 47 has 3 more tens!

We know 118 is greater than 79 because 118 has 1 hundred, meaning it has more than 10 tens.

We know 33 is less than 40 because 33 has less tens.

We can compare numbers using our symbols!
